5th European Survivability Workshop, 8th - 10th June 2010, Alesund, Norway

By admin | Mar 13, 2010

The Survivability Workshop will be held 8th - 10th June 2010 at Rica Parken Hotel, Alesund, Norway.

The Survivability Workshop is a European forum for the exchange of information and for identifying potential areas of cooperation in the field of survivability. Survivability is ‘the ability to complete a mission successfully in the face of a hostile environment’. The workshop is intended for operational, procurement and research staff in government and industry.

In current operations involving European nations, the survivability of bases, personnel and equipment has a very high priority, and is all the more challenging as it must be achieved in an environment where the threat is rapidly evolving. This workshop aims to explore the operational context of armed forces, the developing threats and the systems aspects of technical and non-technical solutions for survivability. The tri-service scope of the conference promotes the exchange of ideas and best practice in the fields of survivability modelling, materials, and techniques used for operational environments which are increasingly experiencing common threats.

The participating nations are France, Germany, Norway, Sweden, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom. The workshop is an initiative of the research organizations EMI (GE), TNO (NL), FFI (NOR), FOI (SWE), DSTL (UK) and DGA (FRA). The workshop is organised under the Europa Memorandum of Understanding.

The 2010 workshop will also focus on systems-level aspects of survivability and lethality for military personnel and platforms, and will encompass threats, technologies, and the integration and optimisation of measures to increase task force survivability.

Planned themes for the workshop are:

  • Military scenarios, emerging threats and operational drivers
  • Land systems survivability, including equipment and logistics
  • Air platform survivability, including combat, transport, rotary wing aircraft and unmanned air vehicles (UAV)
  • Maritime platform survivability
  • Dismounted soldier survivability
  • Protection of fixed installations, such as compounds and military infrastructures
  • Protection of networks and C4I infrastructure
  • Survivability modelling
